The novel “The Old Man and the Sea” is the struggle of a resilient old fisherman. He may be old but he has hope and energy to fight the bad days of life. Though he remained unlucky, yet he did fight the odds of the sea bravely.

Santiago is an old fisherman. He usually fishes alone in a small boat. He has been “gone eighty-four days now without taking a fish”. A boy, Manolin, came to Santiago to learn to fish, for forty days but Santiago’s was unable to catch a fish. The boy’s parents order him to accompany another fisherman.

The old man is thin with “wrinkles in the back of his neck”. The hands of Santiago, the fisherman, have deep scars for rolling the cords while catching fish. “Everything about him was old except his eyes”. Santiago used to teach the boy how to fish and “the boy loved him”. The boy always desires to be with the old man; however, owing his parents’ behavior the Old fisherman,Santiago, asks him to stay away from him….
